Sysnav safety device at the Arcelor site in Gandrange

“At ArcelorMittal Gandrange, the safety of our colleagues is our top priority. By leveraging SYSNAV’s expertise, we aim to implement innovative solutions that provide real-time tracking of movements in challenging environments, minimising risks and improving response times in the event of an incident. ” (Nicoleta Popa, CEO, ArcelorMittal Gandrange)

ArcelorMittal Gandrange is a steelworks located in Moselle, specialising in the production of long steel products for industry, particularly the automotive and energy sectors. The ArcelorMittal group is one of the world’s largest steel producers.

The challenges at the Gandrange site

The need: protecting lone workers

ArcelorMittal Gandrange was looking for a safety monitoring device for lone workers capable of reliably detecting incidents, reporting alerts to safety managers and locating workers anywhere on site to ensure rapid response.

A large site with basements

The site covers several thousand square metres. The presence of floors and basements requires a safety monitoring solution that works equally well indoors and outdoors. To ensure a rapid response in the event of an incident, it is essential that the location functionality is accurate indoors and outdoors and in three dimensions (to identify the floor or basement where the wearer is located).

Incomplete network coverage

Public 4G is available across most of the Gandrange site. A corporate Wi-Fi network is also available in the buildings. However, the site has a large network of basements that are not covered by the Wi-Fi network. It is therefore necessary to expand and extend the network to ensure comprehensive coverage. Sysnav was able to propose a solution to cover the areas were the network was not availbale : the LoRaWAN technology.

The safety monitoring solution of Sysnav

A safety monitoring device capable of detecting incidents and precisely locating alerts

The SYSNAV solution reliably detects incidents (falls, abnormal immobility, etc.) thanks to its expertise in precise motion measurement. It allows the worker in distress to be located precisely and with certainty. Sysnav’s magneto-inertial technology indeed continuously calculates the wearer’s trajectory from their starting point. When triggered, it transmits the exact position both outdoors and indoors, including the floor on which the wearer is located.

Operation on a mixed LoRaWAN and 4G network

The SYSNAV device communicates either via the 4G network using an integrated SIM card or via the LoRaWAN network. The deployment of a LoRaWAN provided by Sysnav teams makes it possible to extend the network coverage to basements at very low installation cost.

Indoor location without heavy infrastructure

Indoors, the Sysnav device does not use beacons for positioning. Deploying beacons is costly in terms of connection and maintenance, especially when the site has multiple buildings and floors. A few inertial recalibration beacons at transition points are sufficient to ensure the reliability of location data.

A dedicated monitoring interface

The Sysnav interface alerts the safety manager in real time to any incident affecting a lone worker. The location feature also speeds up the emergency response.

The benefits for ArcelorMittal Gandrange

Create a safer working environment for everyone across the site

The introduction of innovative devices demonstrates the company’s commitment to staff safety and contributes to a more relaxed working environment that is conducive to efficiency.

Avoid false alarms that impact productivity and ultimately safety

False alarms from certain safety monitoring devices cause precautionary shutdowns while any doubt is being cleared, ultimately leading to a loss of trust in the system and reintroducing risk.

Additional benefits are possible, such as using the tool for safety drills or to more easily integrate safety considerations into any work or refurbishments.
